On January 27, 2006 I received a phone call from my father who was several months into his 27-month sentence. He had found out that day that he had been accepted into a program and would be returning to Los Angeles 9 months earlier than previously planned. On that day I picked up my camera and photographed myself, vowing to shoot a self-portrait each day until his release date. These portraits serve to document passing time in both of our lives. By the time his feet landed on public soil, 269 self-portraits had been created, preserving the 269 days lost in his life.
The collection of images in this book are from several projects, yet are all deeply tied together by the string of time that occurred during my father’s incarceration. Shown with excerpts from the 15-minute phone call permitted between my father and I each week during his sentence, these images serve as the closest connection I was able to have with him during that intangible time.
