“In His Room” is a series of portraits of single men in their bedrooms along with their own written impressions of these most intimate of personal environments.
Photographing men in a space as personal as the bedroom required time to get to know these men and establish a sense of trust, which allowed them to
express their spirituality, uncertainties about the future, grief for those lost to the past, as well as their struggles to find joy in a seemingly joyless decade.
These men do not share their bedrooms with anyone -- except for sex and brief, infrequent visits. Most of the men I met live alone, although some live with family members or roommates who occupy separate rooms of the house.
Just as their sexuality is disparate, so are their bedrooms. The colors of
masculinity used to express themselves are like a Kinsey Scale paint chip. The choice of furnishings and use of space within these bedrooms was also varied -- from minimalist Zen to an accumulation of fifty years of living in one room.
Each man has created a bedroom that defines his current chapter in the
beginning of the 21st Century. “In His Room” shows you how.
