L.A. Street Scenes: Urban Iconography

This book reflects the color and flavor of Los Angeles downtown, a place where brightly colored storefronts are decorated with paintings of the items the store sells - where youth use everything from trash cans to park benches to display their own painting skills - where religious icons and urban icons mix in a wild display. The city of angels is a visual menagerie of legal and illegal art, merchant artists influencing youth culture, and everyone writing on the walls. I don't think, after living and teaching here for the last 20 years, that one can ever mistake Los Angeles street art for anywhere else. The interplay of merchant and youth painting, of dragging news to public spaces, of seeing and being seen. It's L.A. The colors are L.A. The spirit is L.A. Come see!
