I first encountered Mike Greenslade's stunning images of The Jubilee Pool in Penzance one autumn's day at an exhibition in Badcock's Gallery in 2003. I was hugely impressed by Mike's ability to capture the pool's essence and it is a huge pleasure to write the introduction to this book documenting these images.
Mike's photographs certainly highlight the pool's beauty but they also reflect the raw nature of this acclaimed architectural wonder particularly when out of use- we can forgive it not looking its best after all the pool is now over 70 years old. But whilst no longer the streamlined modern marvel it was on the gala opening in May 1935, it most certainly retains popular appeal and the walls still resound to the noise of hundreds of swimmers during the season, all enjoying the unprecedented pleasure of a swim within it's still gleaming white perimeter.
The Friends of The Jubilee Pool are very grateful to Mike, for being so generous in his contribution from the sales of his book to go our campaign to keep the pool operating long into the future. We also owe him a debt of gratitude for creating this marvelous book which I for one will treasure.
