About the Book
The students are learning to label their various body parts. In addition, they are also learning how they use their senses (seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching) to understand the world around them.
The students compared themselves to Nola. They found that Nola had some parts that were different, such as a tail. They learned that Nola had a lot of the same parts but that they looked a bit different, such as her ears and nose. Both humans and dogs have the same three senses - seeing, hearing and smelling. However, while most humans communicate in this order - hearing, seeing and then smelling, dogs primarily communicate by smelling, then seeing and lastly hearing. Nola demonstrated the power of smell by being able to find the rabbit skin that was hidden by the children in the classroom. They saw how Nola responded to sign language to perform her tricks as opposed to words.
Additionally, the book was written at a pre-primer level. It used repetition of phrases which encouraged fluency and confidence. The students will be drawn into this text due to the familiarity and humor of the events that occurred during the photo shoots.
