About the Book
The photos shown in this book focus on how vulnerable people look when photographed from behind, having no opportunity to pose, to don a face, to make a favoured impression. A few interludes of skies, clouds and birds, emphasize the passing of time implied in the other images. What we see, what we face in other people are their outsides. What is inside, is in our imagination.
The photos in Klaucke's DATA are like the concentrates of exquisite short stories, stories of mundane human life, untold histories of the enigma and majesty of individuality, of individual lives. The photos document the inaccessibility of what to each of us is the most intimate: our humanity. Whatever that means.
Rita Klaucke is a Dutch-born artist whose work focuses on drawing and photography. Both her drawings and her photographs are characterized by an unwillingness to be explicit in what exactly they are about, thus provoking the necessity for the spectator to ruminate
