GANIAN

Click to preview book

The photographs of this book entitled “Ganian” were taken in the former horse-track of Faliro in Athens, Greece during the years of 1985 and 1986.
The book took its name from the humble and omnipresent magazine with the daily racing forms.
I was not interested in photographing the races, the horses and the jockeys but rather it intrigued me to capture the faces of the bettors and the metamorphosis that occurs to them during the horse-races.
All the excitement and the hope of watching the race, the anger and the dismay after the race is over and the deep contemplation while studying the race-card for the next bet, when for a moment, everyone of them becomes an island in the midst of the crowd.

About the Author

Zisis Kardianos
ziskar  Zakynthos, Greece
Born in 1962. I live in Zakynthos, Greece. I begun photographing in 1984. I have studied sociology and photography. I don't make my living through photography, it is however an important aspect of my life. My work gets published from time to time in Greek and foreign magazines. Even though I pursuit the individual image, my work fits in different projects.
