I visited Shanghai for a long weekend whilst working in Hong Kong in May 2008. I really didn't know what to expect having never been to mainland China before. I booked myself into the Hyatt in Jinmao Tower on the 86th floor, expecting views to die for. But this was before the Olympic Games so I'd never expected there to be smog - there was ! So much so that on the first night I couldn't even see the ground floor.

I was really keen on seeing modern Shanghai but also the older parts as the guidebook said they were disappearing rapidly. So having no idea what to expect I took my camera, guide book and inane sense of direction and went to explore.....
