A photographic expedition to the hinterlands of the Amazon jungle. For decades surfers have dreamed of a 'never-ending wave'. For the very few that have braved the wilds of the largest rain forest on Earth, this is it! The 'Pororoca' is a tidal bore wave that takes place on three different rivers in three Amazonian states of northeastern Brazil, near the Equator. This book documents the exploits of Serginho Laus and his colleagues as they travel to the jungle in search of this dramatic wave. In 2005 Laus set a world record by surfing the Pororoca for an incredible 6.3 miles over some 34 minutes, non-stop! There are only a few places in the world where river surfing takes place and none more dramatic nor dangerous than the Pororoca of Brazil. An indigenous term meaning 'great destructive noise' or 'destroyer' this documentary project shows what it's like to surf rivers in the Amazon, in a hostile environment replete with piranhas, crocodiles, rays, snakes, jungle cats and every kind of disease-carrying bug that bites. So too, the Amazon is full of beauty and full of life, as you will see in this unique portfolio of photographs. Certainly one of Mother Nature's least-known natural phenomena, this detailed work shows in words and images what its like to travel deep into the wilds of the Amazon in pursuit of one of the most unique sporting endeavors imaginable.
