About the Book
Dhaka, at the confluence of many rivers forming the mighty Padma and Meghna gushing towards the Bay of Bengal, has its river port on Buriganga. Life, culture and economy flow at the banks of the river, where ships, steamers and small boats ferry people and cargo round the clock. Overpopulation, crowd and poverty could not hinder the human activities and engagement. Fiercely proud about their own ‘Bengali’ language, the dynamic people strive to make their presence felt, wherever they are. Devastating flood, historical tragedy and political catastrophe are brushed aside routinely, when extraordinary kindness are ordinary occurrences.
Poyla Boishak, the Bengali New Year is the greatest day of carnival. The celebrations include the remembrances to the great heroes of language revolution and freedom struggle. Men and women of all ages clad in new dresses show their best faces, decorated by local artists celebrate on the streets and parks of Dhaka.
This book is dedicated to the people of Dhaka, who lead the most vibrant and colorful life along the rivers, which flood its banks both with fortune and misery.
