About the Book
Objects of antiquity have fascinated Jason Brammer since childhood and he is consistently drawn to relics that show how time has weathered them over the years. Rusting surfaces, water damage, and oxidized brass all play a part in creating a nautical feeling from a bygone era that he aims to capture in this body of work. Jason is also interested in evoking a timeless nostalgia that you can't quite put your finger on, but gives you the distinct sense that you are observing an artifact from another time or place. Jason's latest works plunge us below sea level through the eyes of a cartographer from an indeterminate era. This map maker's archaic visions of oceanic beasts and living portals writhing with tentacled creatures seem to be salvaged from a sunken sea vessel, hundreds of years ago. Now, these vestiges are archived under museum glass in order to preserve them for future generations. Ruminating on bestiaries, medieval manuscripts, and antique hand-drawn maps, Jason has created a series of paintings and drawings exploring humankind’s quest to explain the unexplainable as we dive "Into the Deep"……...
