About the Book
Almost Human is the second book about insect photography that Richard has produced during his studies at University.
This book is part of Richard's Final Major Project and accompanies a series of 6 large-format insect-portraits which were recently displayed as part of his Degree show at Media City UK.
Almost Human aims to challenge the conventional views and perspectives that we have of insects.
Instead of traditionally looking down at insects from afar and never seeing the unique and fascinating facial characteristics which they possess, Richard wanted to try to express their ''almost human'' nature and by doing so, to give a truly unique perspective into this fascinating world.
Produced in collaboration with The Entomology Collection at The Manchester Museum, Richard captured a series of highly detailed insect portraits which were produced using a photographic technique called focus-stacking whereby lots of images are taken of an insect and are then digitally rebuilt into one large-format high-resolution image.
Each of his final exhibition images being constructed from from an average of 150 single images!
As well as showing these detailed insect portraits, the book Almost Human is also a photographic documentary about the absolutely incredible Entomology Collection at The Manchester Museum where these images were captured earlier this year.
