About the Book
This book is a follow up document to the B-Types exhibition held at Daido Moriyama's Gallery, Place M, Tokyo in Jan 2013, by British artist Tim Freeman, and is therefore a must see for all fans of Japanese photography.
The images in this body of work are produced in an experimental and auto-destructive process of photography, printing, painting, layering, accumulating and burning.
The work explores the performative nature of the photographer in a new landscape (In this case the Japanese cities of, Yokohama and Kamakura) and how photography can be used as a tool for finding and establishing an identity in an unfamiliar environment. Thinking of the work as traces from such activity the images become multi-sensory documents of what it’s like to be alive and aware in a process of constant change, uncertainty and renewal.
The avoidance of text in the work is an attempt to allow the photographic image to operate freely without the constrictions of any preconceived ideas imposed by explanations and language.
