About the Book
Anyone can write a diary, but few can recall the memories of more than 80 years ago with the wit and freshness of James Rogers. "Growing Up in Brighton" tells of childhood in the 1920s and 30s in this bustling seaside resort town in East Sussex, England. Some of the stories are undeniably humorous, while others point to the hardships that were a reality of life even in the fun-loving town of Brighton. What is remarkable through all of Jim's writing is how filled with optimism it is: not even getting run over by a lorry would dampen his spirits! Like many things in life, it could, after all, have been much worse. In order to retain the originality of this work little of the original text has been edited. As Jim's eldest grandchild, it has been a joy compiling and publishing this book especially as, by some remarkable twist of fate, I ended up moving to Brighton from Canada myself in 2012. I have seen the busy streets, smelled the unique Brighton sea air, heard the seagulls cry above the music of the pier... and everywhere I am reminded of the little lad described in this book. This boy, with his cheeky smile, went on to have many more adventures after growing up in Brighton. Perhaps I was one of those adventures, Grandad?
