In late August of 2008 I quit my oppressive desk job, gave up my apartment, put my things in storage, and began a 53-day journey around America on Amtrak. It was a silly time to be traveling The States. The economy was throwing up its guts, Hurricane Ike tore into Houston, the price of oil was mile-high, and the presidential campaigns were raging like Tasmanian devils fighting over prime rib.

All of these distractions seemed to make one of America's classic pariahs, graffiti, even less visible than before. Walking in cities, it's easy for eyes to miss street art. But jump on a train in the United States and you're inundated. America's rails are peppered with tags of all types, from intricate bombs to classic monikers.

This book is a catalog of the graffiti I encountered during my travels.
