About the Book
The idea for this project started by photographing my hands to create a record of the physical changes, things like; wrinkles, scars, cuts, etc. I’ve always had respect, liking, and admiration for hands. A surgeon isn’t born with special abilities in his hands; he develops a gift and then uses it to save people's lives. A pianist uses the ability in his hands to entertain the world, and construction workers use their hands, to build a space where the surgeon and musician will showcase their talents.
All these photographs are of people I know by name. I am aware that as the project grows, it will naturally evolve and change. I am eager to compile hundreds of images but will do so, patiently. Everyone has different abilities and skills with their hands, and we all appreciate our hands in a variety of ways.
Women get their nails filed, while others won’t waste a dime on lotion. Some people adorn their hands with rings, while others only wear their wedding bands. We greet others with hands shakes, can insult them by raising the wrong finger, and then ask God for forgiveness by putting our hands together. We use our hands to take an oath, to pledge our allegiance, and millions use sign language to communicate.
