Of the three volumes that comprise Up from the Deep, Part One is the most personal, as it grew from and is centered on my experience of living for five-and-a-half years in a Sixth Street SRO (single room occupancy residential hotel). Beginning with the historical background of Sixth Street and South of Market, Part One is an insider's view of Sixth Street's SROs, and of the sociological phenomenon that is present-day Sixth Street. My love for the district's post-industrial landscapes and decaying Edwardian architecture is captured in sixty-five photographs, which also include some SRO interiors and various street scenes, as well as six historical photos of Sixth Street and South of Market. Part One concludes with stories and photos of some of the people who are the soul of Sixth Street, virtually invisible to everyone except those who live and work in the neighborhood.
