Primer is a catalogue of Rob Elliott's exhibition "Primer", 31 drawings first shown at Ottawa's Artguise Gallery in 2008.
Each drawing is given a page of its own, and is reproduced at full size.
About the series:
In his new series of drawings, Primer, Rob Elliott uses nostalgic materials and forms to insert his own strange visions into the viewer's memories. The gouache and ink drawings bring to mind children's advertising and educational materials of the 1970s: Lowney's Cherry Blossom ads, The Electric Company, and every elementary school primer. Primer is intended to be viewed as loose pages from lost publications, tantalizing in their refusal to provide a complete narrative.
Elliott argues that nostalgia for the 1970s is less about getting back to a comfortable place than it is about double-checking if one correctly remembers these unsettling images, all earth-toned psychedelia and full of "old-fashioned" flourishes. By inserting the real world of the period inside the commercial art of the period, Elliott means to short circuit the objects of nostalgia and the viewers of nostalgia.
