About the Book
川流不息[chuān liú bù xī, An Endless Stream], a Chinese proverb, meaning that the river never stops flowing. It is a metaphor for the people or things that act just like water, continuously passing by.
Yu River runs through my hometown - Weifang City, Shandong Province of China. About a decade ago, it was a polluted natural river that was seeping toxins into the ground. Later, the city government started the river remediation project that aimed to build a new river environment. Parts of the river became bedded with cement, which no longer allowed water to penetrate the ground; parts of the river were completely hidden by a culvert, and they built a new artificial river above it.
Today, the city of Weifang has forgotten its toxic past and indulges in the artificial water. I am documenting how these people transform the nature into manmade landscapes and how they fall into the reliance on this artificial river. The work reflects the relationship between the human being and the artificial. In my mind, the people of Weifang are truly just like water, continuously reshaping nature as an endless stream.
