About the Book
Phoenix, Arizona is a city constantly searching for its identity. During Phoenix’s short life it has displayed numerous personalities; 50’s boom town, 70’s reconstruction, 90’s wannabe Los Angeles and its current incarnation which is displayed within this project. Divided into distinct sections, my students were assigned specific areas to explore. The results display numerous contradictions within Phoenix’s geographic boundaries. A neighborhood of gates and cameras is just a few miles from historic neighborhoods where people embrace community and gather on porches. Wealth vs. poverty, art vs. status quo, nature vs. industry, these are all different facets of the same city. Phoenix, like the mythological bird, is constantly rebirthing and rising from the ashes of its past to create a vibrant and exciting place.
