About the Book
Not many would call Belgrade, the city placed where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans, beautiful. Or quiet. Or polished. Or moderate. Or wealthy. Or gentle. Or squeaky clean, despite its name being translated as White City.
It is rough both around the edges and in the middle. It is hectic, gritty, hazy. Quite often it does not smell especially good either. It has cold winters, scorching summers, windy falls and short springs – and it shows.
The city, like its inhabitants, is tough and it has reasons to be. Throughout its history it has seen too many wars, too much destruction, and too many conquerors coming and going. Its face does not hide long history, deep battle scars, and centuries of difficult life. Its face is weathered, well lived in, unpretentious, full of desire to learn, and, most of the time, welcoming.
