"The power of these images lies in a complex ambiguity. Universality is overwhelming in these bodies, as race, gender, age—and other dividing factors between human-kind— fade away until they become indistinguishable. Ever the jokester, Rich often manages to befuddle us completely as to the images’ original placement on the body. Many of these photos become bodyscapes: the body in the frame recedes and a landscape rushes toward us. Through Rich’s framing and lighting, the human body becomes a blank canvas much like a cloud—the impression concocted by the unique viewer is projected onto the image. An ambiguous illusion, much like the dubious double image of Rubin’s Vase, manifests itself on the majority of the pages in this book. Or perhaps a page will be turned and an entirely new way of looking at an elbow or knee will illuminate the retina." -Katherine Ariano
