About the Book
For five months in 2008, I lived with my family in the Huangpu District of Shanghai near People's Square. The city has 20 million inhabitants and within the boundless density of sidewalks, subways and public spaces I began to seek out the solitary side of the city. Hidden beneath the nonstop construction, sidewalk throngs and limitless technology were glimpses of isolation, emptiness and tradition clinging to the edge of the twenty-first century.
