About the Book
In the summer of 2006, I traveled to Slovakia where I researched effects of the transition from communism to democracy and capitalism with the help of a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) from the University of New Hampshire. I did so by collecting oral histories from twenty-four people in my extended family that ranged from eighteen to eighty-seven years old, with the help of my father who served as translator. Most of my time was spent conducting interviews in the town of Myjava, where my extended family has been situated for hundreds of years. This book is a compilation of the stories gathered during my journey.
