Too often we think of nature as a location that we drive to and view from designated scenic spots. Too often nature is something disconnected from ourselves - some global thing that scientists study.

We never really look at and appreciate what is in our own neighborhood because we think that it is nothing special and we know it already. We see it everyday. We give it a name. We file it away and we never look searchingly at it ever again.

We need to forget the names that we have placed on the world. It's time to see with fresh eyes.

About the Author

Mark Whitney
forestrat  Western New York State, USA
I grew up in a small town in western New York State. Living in a farming community and not far from the Finger Lakes and Adirondack Mountains, with an avid outdoorsman for a father and a gardener/bird lover for a mother, I learned to appreciate the natural world at an early age. My formal education is in organic chemistry and environmental studies. I have a day job in computers developing information systems, but I spend as much of my free time as I can outdoors enjoying the beauty of the world around me and sharing my experiences through my writing and photographs.
