About the Book
ENIGMA explores the interaction between humans and nature in the landscape, through as series of surreal portraits that question identity, and how a portrait is made and viewed. The subject is integrated into the landscape and adapts their body to their surroundings, but at the same time they are hidden from our view. The landscape is also changed or hidden from our view. The paradox in the work is that viewer can see the subject, and yet they cannot see them. The identity of the subject and the landscape is hidden to confuse or confound the viewer and give an impression of enigma and uncertainty.
The work captures that moment in which the subject is in a physically uncomfortable position, and is exposed either literally or metaphorically.
The subject interacts with the landscape, and their presence alters it by using light or mirrors or shadows – but never digital manipulation. These images are not retouched.
This harmonious blending of two concepts – the subject appearing to be part of the landscape, but not actually being able to see either the landscape or the subject as they really are - attempts to awaken existential enigmas in the viewer's mind.
