About the Book
Oil plays a crucial part in our everyday lives, providing energy, plastics and other resources; it is virtually impossible to imagine a world without it. Oil’s environmental impact, however, is far-reaching and undeniable.
Although the UK oil industry is normally thought of as being confined to the fields in the North Sea, significant onshore drilling takes place on the South Coast. Dorset has the largest onshore oil field in Europe, and its oil is pumped to the refinery in Fawley, Hampshire.
The sites of this activity are often hard to see due to their inconspicuous country surroundings, yet there is always a point where they can be viewed legally. The Boundaries of Oil is a photographic project focusing on this industry from an outsider’s perspective, by only capturing its landscapes from public rights of way.
