About the Book
There and Back is a short project documenting a part of my own everyday.
Heavily influenced by the writings of George Perec, who looked at the everyday through observations and wrote a number of books and papers on the subject, this project is based on similar observations of the everyday but instead of documenting them in words, I have recorded them in the form of photography.
The ‘everyday’ is a vast subject area to look at. What exactly is the everyday? There is no one definitive description. Each person’s everyday differs from the next and everybody’s interpretation of the everyday will vary.
My everyday, as a whole, is quite different to that of most other people. Living in a caravan my everyday is made up of changing gas bottles, emptying the waste water and fighting to stay warm in the winter – but I wouldn’t change my everyday to live in bricks and mortar.
In the instance of this book, I have chosen to document my short trip to and from the shower block. And rather than document full areas of view (which are normally seen as the everyday in general) I have documented this everyday occurrence in detail; taking macro shots of the things I use, touch or see on my way to and from the shower block.
To me, the everyday is the fine detail of every day that gets overlooked by most people. The everyday is the banal and the finer details in life are often considered unremarkable. Yet if it wasn’t for all these small details, there would be no objects; no everyday.
The idea of this book is to open people’s eyes to the minute details that make up all of our everyday lives; to make the unremarkable remarkable.
