About the Author

Mark Tuschman
marktuschman  Menlo Park, CA 94025
I have been a corporate location photographer for 30 years, with a majority of my clients in the healthcare and pharmaceutical fields. Since 2001 I have also devoted my energy to the issues of global healthcare and development, especially involving women’s reproductive healthcare. This year I was fortunate to receive the Global Health Council photographer of the year award. My first book, “Still I Rise”, on the importance of women’s reproductive healthcare, was supported by a grant from the Packard Foundation. "Capital of Hope" is a visual documentary on the effects of microfinance and a girl's scholarship program organized by WomensTrust in the village of Pokuase, Ghana. Because poverty in the third world is so endemic, I wanted to see for myself if microfinance offered a possible solution, a pathway out of the endless cycle of hardship. We at WomensTrust had the good fortune of having Mark find us, come to Pokuase on his own nickel, allow himself to drink in the harsh reality and the hope. Poverty is not a dead end and that he captures in deed, word and thought -- with arresting images to help viewers embrace the notion that resourced individuals and communities can make a difference in Africa. At WomensTrust we struggle with funding, yet our "model" for connecting not only has lasting impact (and isn't that what Mark's book communicates in full glory, the beginning of the road up and out!) – it also can be replicated. Our process is our strength. People in Pokuase are the drivers and the doers, we are there with support. And we start with women and girls because they are the entry point for earning a high return with, other than circumstantial, almost no risk. What a warm and beautiful investment in true progress.

I had the good fortune to view a hard copy of Mark Tuschman's book, "Capital of Hope." The photos are arresting, each one forcing you to stop, linger and reflect. The subjects in each photo are captured in such a way that you feel you can look into their souls. This powerful compilation of photographs and commentary stays with you long after you put the book down.
