Following the Civil War little was left for southern families to survive on. Southerners were looking for a new life in an area which could offer them virgin farmland and safety from the carpetbaggers and past. Word quickly spread that Upshur County, Texas offered dense virgin forests and land that could produce far more than the old states and this book is about the early settlers who came to Upshur County to build a new life and a new state. Hundreds of photographs vividly tell the story of the families who packed packed their ox-drawn wagons and made the long journey to the piney woods of East Texas.
