In Eastern Light is Steven Keirstead's exploration of the Earth, Water and local vernacular Architecture of rural Hancock County, Maine. Lying east of the Penobscot River, the Downeast Coast region includes the spectacular Acadia National Park, as well as quiet seaside villages.

In a novel approach to documentary and fine art photography, Steven combines an aesthetic inspired by Japanese Painting with medium format film photography. This photographic diptych series was made with careful planning to allow printing of each pair of adjacent negatives on a single sheet of paper. This book presents the diptychs as an artistic meditiation of light and place.

Steven Keirstead was born in Saigon, Vietnam in 1965. His family lived in Chiang Mai, Thailand and Brevard, North Carolina. Steven’s aunt Patricia Austin and grandfather William C. Austin were professional photographers. At Rice University, Steven studied photography with Geoff Winningham and Peter T. Brown. He crafted photocollages inspired by David Hockney’s Cameraworks and simpler 35mm diptychs. Steven had a work study job for Peter Brown as a color printer. He earned a BA in 1987 (Biology and Art & Art History) followed by a BFA in 1988. After college, Steven moved to Boston, Mass-achusetts, where he met his boyfriend Lansing Wagner, a potter and biologist. In November of 2007 the couple were married in Boston. They continue to live in Boston and visit the Blue Hill area on the coast of Maine every summer. Steven has been working on a series of diptychs since 2007. He still prefers working with color negative film and printing optically on Type C paper.
