Consumed + Off-Season

Since 2004, Susana Raab has been traveling around the US, examining the practice of leisure time and the iconography and idolatry of fast-food consumption in America. She sees these as two-sides of the same coin: a situation both created in large part by marketing and advertising.

While Raab's editorial work shows that she's an exceptional and talented photojournalist I think the high point of her work is the personal projects she sets for herself. Documentary work is usually more a mirror held to society's face than a magnifying glass view of the artists psyche, but Raab, to her credit, has managed to show both in one book. While we all know that we're a consumerist society and our waistlines are the proof, Raab has a uncanny way of showing the absurdity of it all. When the kinks are worked out, this will be a meaningful book. Be sure to check out her other work on her website. Randy Kuhn www.poptophorror.com

As the author of this book, I feel compelled to let any potential readers know that the orientation of the previews, especially after the first Finis are haphazard and incorrect. I stand by with bated breath to make sure that the book is published as designed, with both series oriented to a typical western reader - two books in one. Don't let the preview fool you!
