« WHO’S AFRAID OF LITTLE BUNNY RABBITS? BELIEVE IT OR NOT, BUT WHEN YOU ASK THIS QUESTION, GUARANTEED MANY HANDS WILL RISE. LEPORIPHOBIA, THE FEAR FOR RABBITS, IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON PHOBIA’S IN OUR WESTERN SOCIETY, AND NOT ONE EASILY OVERCOME. UNLESS YOU WANT TO EXPOSE YOURSELF TO THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ANXIETY, OR SHOCK THERAPY. PHOTOGRAPHER SYLVAIN NORGET CHOOSE THE FIRST OPTION, BUT IN A MOST ORIGINAL WAY. HE BECAME THE RABBIT.
Sylvain Norget is one of the many people who suffers from the bunny phobia. It started as a childhood trauma and has developed into a paralyzing anxiety for mostly albino rabbits. But Sylvain has found a most original way to fight back and overcome his angst. And he calls it The Naked Rabbit Project. »
Sylvain Norget is a photographer, who practices his profession in the cities of Bordeaux, Toulouse and Paris. Hardly places where one might encounter bunnies. Still, the fear for the furry little animals is a very real thing to 34-years old Sylvain. Before being a photographer, Sylvain was a well appreciated model himself, which has lead him to work in the fashion, model and artistic portraits area. Always looking for new and original concepts, last year he stumbled upon a mask that would change his life: a bunny mask. Probably scared to death at first, Sylvain decided to take the bull by the horns – or in this case the rabbit by the ears – and in an attempt to overcome his phobia he created The Naked Rabbit Project, a series of photos showing a male model wearing nothing but the rabbit mask.
Over a years time, Sylvain has shot many photographs using the bunny in just as many different settings. Outside, in the woods, where the scenery gives it a most chilling look, inside, in the bedroom, creating a very erotic masked atmosphere. And even in still life kind of scenes, creating a serene soberness of peace and loneliness. We see a man wearing his mask as if hiding behind his fear, and while the project evolves, he seems more and more comfortable with the symbol of his anxiety. An interesting therapy and what makes it even more intriguing is that all photos are self portraits.
