About the Book
Foreword
Tradition and Design
When we are designing new interiors and creating them in a specific style of any ancient culture we have to look back and study the original very precisely. Those old cultures grew very slowly over time and adapted using local material and construction traditions to build perfect homes that are resistant to their existing local environments.
The traditions tell us stories from their history, teaching us techniques how to use and treat local materials, and finally giving us the skills to build.
Those values that we inherit are of enormous value to us and it is essential that we continue to educate our future generations.
Malia Acohido did an exemplary such job with her Thesis Project Hana Aloha Hale.
She went back to the traditions of the Hawaiian Hale which is a fascinating sustainable structure. She used the beauty of Hawaiian nature as her inspiration, and created an exciting example how hospitality on Hawaii can be successfully designed. It was a great experience for me to be Malia’s adviser for this beautiful project.
Thank you Malia!
