Black Sea of Concrete

Click to preview book

The first thing you notice by the sea is the concrete. Kilometers of grey blocks sometimes painted with blue and yellow, the national colors of Ukraine. You can feel the soviet past at once. It looks surreal and it doesn’t match the beautiful landscape that surrounds you. Industrial zones and the iron waste by the sea don’t remind harmonic idyll between nature and man. People have changed the landscape in a very brutal way here. But the sea fights back for its natural shape and territory. Local people seem to respect the power of the sea. Nevertheless at he same time they thoughtlessly devastate it. This wired symbiosis makes this piece of land fascinating. I went to the Ukrainian Black Sea coast to explore this mutual influence and relation between the man and sea. Ukraine is the country in transition and for the last few years has been looking for its new identity. In my opinion so has the Black Sea coast.

Extraordinary and excellent picturesof Ukraine-- but is this really a balanced view of the country ? I have seen pictures of yalta that are not like this .. also ukrainians have a reputation or being very "dressy" notably their highly glamourous presidential candidate, and also unlike the neighboroughing rusians they have a tradition of old -fashioned courtesy -where is all that ? Where are the rolling wheat fields and the orthodox chruches?

Gorgeous work but way out of my price range. $150 is too much.

Extraordinary photographs, but also a brilliant construction of the book. The typography is genius, particularly the use of line spacing to reflect the spacing of waves as you look out to sea. I can't read the text itself in the book preview however, and I can't tell whether the preview is showing me all or only a portion of the book. But...the photos are so, so good. Often, there's a choice made (the dog out of focus, the sea shore unlevel, the framing) which is counterintuitive, but works. This is a sign of real art: breaking rules so well. The color palette in the photos is rich and soulful, as are the compositions and the overall tone--which I read as being lonely, noble, desolate beauty.

All that said (and I can't say enough about the quality of the photos or the artistry of the book layout), the price is steep at $150. I'd drop $75 on this book easy, but I have to think really hard about spending $150, particularly since I don't know if there's more to the book than I can see in the preview mode. Anyway, Dzinkuja, Bardzo Wadnia. -- Anker
