There are so many books available on the subject of dog training; it can be really confusing. This book gives a different perspective:
How does the pet feel about all this?
I have been around animals my entire life. At times, I can truthfully say, I have chosen their company over people. I have discovered an innate ability to “tune in” on their feelings, if not their thoughts. I have been called a “Dog Whisperer,” “Dr. Doolittle” and other names by people trying to describe what it is that I do. I consider myself an Animal Ambassador.
Many people try to get a dog to do what they want it to do without considering how the animal may feel about that. I have found that most dogs are more than happy to do what you ask of them, if they understand what you are asking and are rewarded in ways, meaningful to them, for doing so.
In the other extreme, people want to show their love for their dogs (especially pups) by allowing them to do whatever they (the pets) want. This approach leads to a pet without any idea what is expected of them. They often become little tyrants, taking over the lives of the people in their lives. The people, in turn can come to resent this attitude and many of these bewildered pets wind up in shelters or abandoned by the people who thought they were doing what was best for the dog.
I wrote this book with the purpose of showing people a dog’s point of view on adoption and training.
Hopefully, this book will lead to a little clearer understanding of the needs of the dog and how people can help to fulfill those needs, creating a lasting bond with, and lifetime friend of their canine companion. The book is intended for a wide range of readers, from adults to children, and even to be read to small children in hopes of fostering care and compassion for dogs.
My hope is that you will read this book and come away with a better feel for your dog and his needs and with a determination to do what is best for the dog: train him to be a happy, productive member of your family.
From your dog’s point of view, you will be his champion, earning his lifelong loyalty, trust and devotion.
