Blank, redacted, broken, rusted, misspelled - dysfunctional signs prominently declare nothing, proclaim nonsense, or subvert the sign-maker's purpose.

In this collection, Kirk Carter explores the subtext of signage through photos of incomplete, vandalized, weathered and painted-over signs.

Only by zeroing in on signs without ostensible meanings can we really see their underlying messages, information our subconscious minds have always gathered beneath our notice.

About the Author

Kirk Carter
kirkcarter  Christiansburg, Virginia, US
Kirk began taking photos long before the present epoch. He learned black and white darkroom skills at the University of Maine in 1975. His student films at New York University incorporated stills, sometimes cut and pasted together to create "special" effects. For most of the 1980's, he produced television shows for local cable stations, winning an ACE Award in 1991. After earning a BSEE from the University of Central Florida in the 90's, Kirk designed cellular base stations for AT&T. In 2000, he started Service First Webmasters, a business web site services company. Kirk now works with a modern DSLR and a digital darkroom, focusing on what might be called "fine art" photography, for lack of a better term. Kirk won the 2008 Scenic Virginia Photo Contest. His work has been shown in various Southwest Virginia venues, published online and in an environmental journalism magazine.
