This volume is the first of what I could only imagine would one day be a full catalog of Ruel’s work. I look at this edition as a growth ring in his ever expanding oeuvre. These particular pieces seem more personal than some of his earlier works. His paintings are dreamlike. He seems to do his best work while the rest of the world is in slumber. The imagery he depicts is so unique and inviting that I would love to take up residence in the dreamt up reality that is Grimly Pitch or to take part in the frenetic energy in The Chase. I would use the moniker Nocturnal Surrealism.
