Testimonial is a novella set in the 1960's about John Mercer, a professional England Test Match cricketer being awarded a Testimonial year for his services to cricket in this his final season before retiring. One of the matches staged by John is against Stansmere, a village cricket club situated twenty miles outside of London in very picturesque surroundings that he has dealings with over the years. The game is to be televised by BBC 2 and commentaries of the proceedings by well-known personalities in this field. early of the morning of the match, the president of the club out walking his dog on the common, discovers a body of dead woman floating in the lake behind the pavilion. He informs the police who quickly appear on the scene to invstigate the matter. It appears this woman is the late wife of the groundsman at the cricket club. The police manage to complete their enquiries and have left the common prior to the start of the cricket match. They have taken with them into custody the groundsman for further questioning. The cricket match is allowed to be played without problems so to speak of, and is enjoyed by all present. There are many, though, left wondering if the groundsman is under suspicion of perhaps having murdered his wife. Only time will tell as the story unfolds.
