All Blurb Trade books automatically include a free ISBN. When you create a Trade Book in BookWright or the Blurb plug-in for Adobe InDesign®, it will be assigned an ISBN and barcode free of charge.

If you have purchased an ISBN for your book yourself, you may use your own ISBN instead of the Blurb-assigned ISBN. You can add your own ISBN by contacting Customer Support.

How much should I set the price of my book for?

There’s no easy formula to pick a price for your book. We have a great blog post that has some things to think about when pricing your book. In a nutshell, you should do some research, online or in local bookstores, to see how much other books like yours are being sold for.

What is the retailer list price?

You can think of the retailer list price as the price that would be printed on the dust jacket of the book. Some retailers will sell the book for that amount; other retailers may sell it for less than that amount.

What will the actual sale price of my book be?

The retailer determines the sale price. Some retailers will sell the book for the list price; other retailers may sell it for less than that amount. Regardless of the price at which the retailer sells your book, you receive the profit determined by the list price and wholesale discount you set.

What is the Wholesale Discount?

Changing the wholesale discount will impact how and where the book is accessible. The greater the discount, the more attractive it is for the retailers to sell your book. This deeper discount also means a higher minimum retail price. Some retailers will only accept books with a 55% discount so selecting a 55% discount will ensure the broadest exposure.

How much of a share does everyone else get?

The retailers keep the difference between what you set as the wholesale price (List price combined with wholesale discount) and the amount that they sell the book for. Blurb’s share is built into the cost of the book. Retailers make their money by selling the book for more than the wholesale price.

I submitted my book to the Global Retail Network. What happens next?

Within one to two business days it will be added to the Ingram catalog, which is available to retailers worldwide. At that time, your book will be available for special order from bookstores in the Ingram network, and for online bookstores to list and sell on their website. Amazon tends to pick up new content more quickly; other retailers can take longer, as long as several weeks. Blurb and Ingram don’t have control over when a retailer displays a book.

You should also think about ways for you to market and promote your book to generate interest. We have some great ideas here.

Can I list my book for sale on Blurb and in the Global Retail Network at the same time?

It is possible to sell your book both through Blurb Direct Sell and through the Global retail network. Keep in mind that, due to Amazon requirements, your Blurb selling price must be the same or higher than the retail price set for the Global Retail Network.

Please note: Books found listed for sale with a selling price on Blurb that is lower than the selling price on Amazon will be immediately removed from distribution.

How do I find my book once it is listed? How long will that take?

It can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks for your book to appear in online bookstores. We suggest that you set up a Google Alert for your ISBN so that you are notified whenever it appears online.

Will I be able to tell when there have been sales of my book?

Sales will be displayed on your book sales page.

How and when should I expect to receive payment for sales of my book?

Sales will be displayed as pending on your book sales page once an order has been submitted. Sales will be accrued as profit once the transactions are closed, about 90 days after the sale.

How do I remove a book listing in the Global Retail Network? How long will this take?

Please contact Customer Service for assistance in removing your book from distribution. It can take up to several weeks for retailers to remove a book from their catalog and any pending orders will be fulfilled before the book is removed.

What about returns?

Because your books are printed only when an order is placed, the status for your books in the Global Retail Network is automatically set to “nonreturnable”. The reason for this setting is that Blurb wants to protect authors from the costs associated with a high level of returns. Once a book sells, it stays sold.

Will my local bookstore sell my book? Can I pick what physical bookstores I want to carry my book?

Because books in the Global Retail Network have nonreturnable status, physical stores will be unlikely to place a bulk order for your books to place on a physical shelf since bookstores don’t want to be left with inventory if the books don’t sell.

If you want to sell your book through your local bookstore, many independent booksellers are happy to place books on their shelves on a consignment basis.

Your book is also available to special ordered by physical bookstores worldwide.
