Albert Lewis was born in Co. Londonderry in 1938. After attending the Rainey Endowed School in Magherafelt and Coleraine Technical College he served an apprenticeship in the motor trade.
In 1960 he joined the Merchant Navy as an Engineer Officer and travelled extensively to the Far East and North America. Subsequently he worked as a Refrigeration Engineer in Belfast and Manchester.
In 1979 he joined the Royal Ulster Constabulary having previously been a part time Reserve Constable 1971 - 73. He was involved in the civil unrest surrounding the Hunger Strikes in 1981. He was also an Army Liason Officer. He retired 1998.
