The author, with his twin brother, is the eldest of a family of seven boys. With a scottish mother and a Jordanian father, Ali was born in Jordan. When he was eight years old the family moved to England and for four years he benifited from education at an English school, On returning to Jordan he finished his schooling and is now is his penultimate year at the Science and Technology university medical school in Yemen.
