Mark Stuart was born in Melbourne,Australia. He received no formal art draining and describes himself as being formed « by surfing,literature,classical music and a developing consciousness of nature ». After leaving school he travelled north to Darwin then to Bali,Java,Sumatra,Malaysia and Thailand. He went to Sydney in 1978,determined to work as a sculptor. One night he placed a sculpture of his in Brett Whitely’s garden in Lavender Bay. He returned the next day to see Whitely’s response and so began an important relationship. Whitely afforded Stuart the use of his studio in Waverton for a year and also introduced him to other Australian artists within his group, Joel Ellenberg, Tim Storier,and
.In 1983 Stuart went to Carrara, Italy, carving monumental sculptures by hand. He travelled through Italy,France,Belgium,Holland,East and West Germany,and Poland.
