Charles Harker was raised in an Air Force family. He traveled extensively across the US as a child and attended 11 schools and two universities before graduating from high school in Waco, Texas. As a teen he lived in Bermuda and attended British schools. Harker lived many years in Texas, and is an alumni of Texas Tech University and the University of Texas at Austin. Upon graduation from UT, he began work on a series of habitable sculptures west of Austin. This work was included in major exhibits in the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1975-76 He worked offshore in Houma, LA in order to begin his own architecture practice in Austin, TX. That firm grew from 6 to 60 over 10 years. In 1986 he was invited to join the faculty architecture at Kent State University. He served on the faculty for 33 years and retired in 2013 but continued to teach design studios until 2021. He now enjoys writing, painting in watercolor, and fly fishing.
