About

I am an acrylic marbling artist who works and teaches in the Portland Oregon area, where I’ve lived since 1999. Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other stone. The patterns are the result of color floated on a viscous solution known as size, and combed with a stylus or rake before being carefully transferred to an absorbent surface, such as paper or canvas. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique monotype.

Creating paintings from my marbled papers is my passion. For nearly two decades, I’ve used marbling as an integral part of my work. I seek out unusual patterns and color combinations as I marble, and then afterwards, I evaluate the marbled paper and carve out subject matter by painting around the figures with transparent and/or opaque applications of acrylic paint. I make other adjustments as needed, such as glazing over an area so that the color is richer in value but the pattern still shows through.
