I have called Puerto Rico home for the past 22 years. During this period I spent three years in Lafayette, Louisiana as a student and the rest of the time teaching English at Universities in Puerto Rico. I am originally from the Midwest. I have long admired the children stories of Raold Dahl , Lewis Carrol, Edward Lear, and the Danish writer Ole Lund Kirkegaard for their language play, affection for the absurd, and for siding with children against the arbitrary authority of adults. Having placed myself for almost half my life in the position of the foreigner who speaks the language, but doesn't always get everything, I understand Thomas Twofeet's predicament. The book has been called profound and psychological, but I think that the greatest compliment is that it is engrossing and fun.
