Martin Karplus was born in Austria and is a world renowned theoretical chemist. He holds professorships at Harvard University and the Universite de Strasbourg. He has been a practicing photographer since the 1950's when he used a Leica IIIC with Kodachrome film to capture images of the world that mostly no longer exist in Europe and the United States. His work has been exhibited in the United States, England and France. Martin now uses a Canon EOS 20D and has concentrated on the peoples of China and India where the cultural heritage of many generations is rapidly disappearing.
