My Bio

Bob Levy, trained as a chemical engineer, recently retired from a career in the petroleum industry. In his retirement years he began photographing the homeless in a quest to capture aspects of personal and cultural shadow. At the outset he saw them as the detritus of society, rejected, downtrodden and unable to function successfully on their own. The homeless have changed him. Their compassion, their intelligence, their hope and courage, their sincerity and dignity - these exploded his stereotype of who the homeless are and his view of himself. In these photos he tries to expose some of the ways stereotypes of homelessness separate us from them, us from ourselves. Through their faces he evokes a connection that might challenge us to meet one another with curiosity and grace rather than suspicion and loathing. His hope is that the viewer will catch a glimpse not only of a face, a life and a person, but of the ways we carry homelessness within ourselves.
