Stephan Koplowitz


About

Stephan Koplowitz is an award winning director/choreographer/media artist known for his work on stage, film and site. His site work aims to alter people’s perspectives of place, site, and scale, all infused with a sense of the human condition and is concerned with the intersection of natural, social and cultural ecologies within urban and natural environments. Since 1984 he has created 87 works and has been awarded 60 commissions performed in the US, Europe and Asia. His work for stage, site and screen have been produced repeatedly by internationally recognized arts venues domestically and abroad. His work in the visual arts, an extension of his interest in site-based and public-art has taken different forms. Light Camera Action (in collaboration with KBAS is an array of three camera obscuras tethered to digital media) was the winner of a public art design competition, was permanently installed at the The Center for Arts and New Media in Salt Lake City, 2013.

Areas of Expertise

Koplowitz is a multi-arts practitioner having produced works in the fields of dance, photography, film, theater and music. His work spans dance theater: (War With the Newts), to the visual (his portable camera obscura project Revealed), to visual public art (permanent digital/analog camera obcuras winner of a public art competition/ SLC Media Arts Center), film works seen in festivals (ScreenDance Miami, Hampton Intl. FF) and site-specific works produced around the world (NYC, Germany, Vietnam).

Professional Affiliations

National Endowment for the Arts Choreography Fellowships: 1988,1989, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997. 2004 Alpert Award in the Arts (Dance), a 2003 Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography and 2000 New York Dance and Performance Award, “Bessie”. 2006, was appointed dean of The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts, Los Angeles) and served in that capacity for ten years until 2016. contributor to the first book on site-specific choreography (Site Dance).
