About the Book
What is endometriosis? Most people, if they have heard the word, associate endometriosis with the menstrual cycle and 'lady parts'. Endometriosis is Much, Much more than that. This book aims to demonstrate the body-wide potential of a disease traditionally perceived as a disease of the female reproductive system. Growing access to the internet has provided opportunity to connect across the globe. Persons with 'atypical' and 'rare' endometriosis are gathering to learn, share knowledge and experiences.
Meanwhile, the medical world declares persons with endometriosis in areas remote of the female reproductive organs as 'rare', 'impossible' or worse, 'there is nothing wrong with you'. The lack of a global system to record and track endometriosis surgically identified disease of non reproductive organs and tissues; failed identification of disease during surgical procedures and nonsurgical misdiagnosis contribute to underestimate prevalance of extrapelvic endometriosis. Prevalence is vital to recognize areas deficient in medical education, identify potential lines of research, pathogenesis and surgical training of specialty surgeons to address endometriosis regardless of the body system involved.
Through the use of the alphabet, areas of the body where endometriosis has been identified (some once or infrequent, other areas more often), are matched with simple images to raise awareness of its body-wide potential. The purpose: create conversation, disrupt traditional norms and validate persons with extrapelvic endometriosis who are dismissed, misdiagnosed or endure a delay in diagnosis. For these persons, this book serves to validate their experiences. For those who have never heard of endometriosis, this book refutes 'traditional beliefs' and provides a modern look at a disease mired in myth and outdated information. For those who provide a medical service, this book serves to raise awareness of, and consideration for endometriosis among differential diagnoses.
